These figures come from storefront tracking accounts reported by games media, not from a Remedy announcement, so treat them as close approximations. The official figure you should plan against is the 120 GB from the store listing.
When pre-load opens
Console players can start downloading before launch: Digital Deluxe from 20 September and Standard from 22 September. Steam pre-load opens on 23 September at 07:00 PT. Getting the download done early matters more than usual here, because the PC install is over 100 GB.
How much free space to leave
Leave 15 to 20 percent above the install size. Compression has to be unpacked during installation, so the game needs temporary space beyond the files it keeps, and PC versions also build a shader cache on first run. On a 1 TB drive with 110 GB free, a 106 GB PC install plus cache and patches is uncomfortably tight.
If your drive is smaller than you would like, the practical options are: move other installed games to a second drive, uninstall anything you have finished, or install the console version on an external SSD that the console supports.
Why an SSD is not optional here
The store listing prints “SSD Required” against both the minimum and recommended configurations, which is unusually blunt. That is consistent with the game’s design: you cross large zones quickly, and the game streams in an open Manhattan with heavy destruction and particles. An HDD install invites texture pop-in and slow loads.
